Paul
McCarthy is Professor of Comparative Culture at Surugadai University in Hanno,
Saitama, Japan. He holds a Ph.D. in East Asian Languages and
Civilizations from Harvard University, and has taught Japanese, Anglo-American,
and Comparative Literature at universities in the United States and
Japan.
He has published numerous articles on the literature of Tanizaki Jun'ichiro and other aspects of twentieth century Japanese literature. His translations include Tanizaki's Childhood Years (Kodansha International, Japan, 1988 and Collins, UK, 1990), (Kodansha International, Japan. 1990 and Flamingo/HarperCollins, UK, 1992), A Cat, a Man, and Two WomenThe Gourmet Club: A Sextet (in collaboration with Anthony Chambers, Kodansha International, Japan, 2001); and Kanai Mieko's The Word Book (Dalkey Archive, USA, 2009)
A Cat, a Man, and Two Women was awarded the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission Prize for a Translation of Japanese Literature, administered by the
Donald Keene Center at Columbia University, in 1991.
